Featured Item: Antique French Candy box

I thought it would be fun to start a weekly "featured item" post highlighting one of my favorite Paris Hotel Boutique items.

This rare 19th century French candy box is one of the most unique pieces I've ever come across. I wish the photos did it justice!

The French confectionery industry has a long history. The French word "confiserie" comes from Latin "confire." Originally, given that sugar was very rare, confectionery was an art that only the wealthiest people only could afford (the Kings of France and the Court would enjoy what they called at that time "épices"). As sugar became more readily available due to increased imports, confectionery as an art and an industry developed.

And if only the wealthy could afford such "sweets," of course they would be housed in an exquisite box such as this one.

The top is convex glass. Under the glass, everything is 3-dimentional. There is a gold foil rooster on red glass. There are seed pearls are gold thread; handpainting and handwriting. I can only decipher part of the handwriting which reads, "Mon Amour..." and "chante" which means "chirp." The outside of the box is heavy cardboard. The box measures 2-3/8" in diameter and a little over 1" high.

Such detail for a little candy box...

It's amazing that a treasure this fragile has survived for so many years. I've never seen one like it before. This rare little box is available for purchase here at Paris Hotel Boutique!

Year of the Dragon!

Today (actually yesterday in China), begins the first of a full 15 days of celebrating the Chinese New Year, which includes big parades, festivals and fireworks all over the world.

Living in San Francisco, we have a large Chinese population. It's wonderful to participate in the many celebrations and customs for this New Year, especially in Chinatown.

Red and Gold are the dominant colors for the Chinese New Year. These colors represent good luck and fortune for the Chinese. Traditionally Chinese people will decorate their homes with paper decorations with these colors.

Named one of the world’s top ten parades, the Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia.

Parade highlights include elaborate floats, lion dancers, folk dancers, costumed elementary school groups, marching bands, stilt walkers, Chinese acrobats, and a foot long Golden dragon, (“Gum Lung”) that takes a team of over 100 men and women to carry.

From all the animals in the Chinese Zodiac the Dragon is the only “fictional animal” in the Chinese Zodiac. The Dragon brings a special kind of fortune with it and many Chinese people will wait to have babies in the “year of the dragon”.

A longtime Chinese tradition is giving family and friends decorative red envelopes with money in them. The Chinese characters on them symbolize good fortune.

As long as I'm on a roll with Tiffany's, look at these beautiful mini-cakes resembling a Tiffany jewelry box!

These were made by Patricia Arribálzaga of Haute Couture Cakes for Tiffany's in Barcelona to honor of 50th anniversary of the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's."

Light chocolate cake with three layers of chocolate cream filling natural strawberry. So, pretty, aren't they?

Wanna pamper yourself? How about a little stay at the 1,700-square-foot Tiffany Suite at the St. Regis New York? At a mere $8,500 plus taxes a night, Holly Golightly would surely be delighted. Let's take a look...

Oooh...this one-of-a-kind suite is brimming with all things "Tiffany's." The signature Tiffany blue is everywhere from the walls to drawer interiors. The dining room was created to resemble a jewel box complete with a diamond in the form of a dramatic crystal chandelier.

The dressing table of course, has it's own vanity with bottles and a tray from Tiffany's

What is that embossed thing in the drawer? A notepad? I need that!

It's the Weekend, Let's Take a Ride!

This amazing footage has been showing up all over my friends Facebook pages and I just had to share it with you!

In 1955, amateur filmmaker Tullio Peligrini strapped a CinemaScope camera to a car on a marvelously clear day and took a driving tour of San Francisco. Peligrini unstrapped the camera too, for sweeping shots of just about every attraction that San Francisco had to offer in the mid-50s.

Even if you've never been to San Francisco, this is such an interesting film. LOVE the music, the fashion...

So, if you have a little time on your hands, put those seat belts on,
and let's take a ride back to 1955, shall we?

That's how 2012 has started for me until a random act of thoughtfulness arrived at my door today. It was just too cute not to share...

Thanks to dear Kimberlee of Edgar & Edgar, I received a lovely box filled with my favorite sweets; pearlized gumballs, pearlized chocolates and pink coconut snowballs! For know other reason than, just because!

And, this handmade glitter-adorned card with fairies wearing crowns!

Perhaps there are such things as fairy godmothers...

It's been quite a year. As some of you may know, I lost my mom this past June, and many days it's been a struggle just to keep up. Your kindness and support have been so healing and comforting. Even if you're not a "drinker," you will devour this spiffy spiral-bound book with its almost Technicolor images.

A Bit of Inspiration

With a new year just around the corner, I was thinking, do we really accomplish the New Year's resolutions that we set for ourselves? Are they just too unattainable?

When I stumbled upon Brunch at Saks recent blog post, it struck a cord. Her "pay it forward" list is an achievable one, with some lovely thoughts and deeds. I'm sharing it with you here since I think it's worth the read and such simple things that we could easily do to pay it forward...

Hand write and mail a note 'just because' to a friend or relative.
Bring a meal to a neighbor or friend when they are sick.
Spend an hour playing games with the residents at our local convalescent hospital.
Pay for the person behind me in a fast food line.
Mow my neighbor's lawn or pull weeds out of their planters.
Bring a pile of old magazines to my doctor's office for her waiting room.
Take unused clothing and household items to a shelter or Goodwill.
Tape the exact change for a soda or snack to a vending machine.
Leave a couple pieces of candy on a coworkers desk with a note.
Pay for the person behind me at a toll booth.
Call a family member or friend on the day of a test or other important event and tell them I'm thinking of them. (I want to push myself to go beyond my comfort zone and actually call them. No text messages, IM's, Facebook comments, etc)
Offer to babysit for our friends who have kids so they can enjoy a night out.
Draw colorful pictures and bring them to St. Joseph's or LA Children's hospital for patients' windows.
Leave behind my magazine or book on a plane.
Make an extra sandwich and snack bag for a homeless person I see often.
Start off by telling a customer service agent "I know this problem is not your fault." I often blame them, which is completely unfair and not right.
Return an extra shopping cart to the front of the store.
Write a note with an encouraging thought and put it in someone's lunch bag or coat pocket.
If nothing else, simply open the door for someone and leave them with a smile.

Isn't that lovely? So, now it's my turn to come up with a list, although I must say that I would love to use some of Annemarie's inspiring ideas.

Tonight begins the first night of Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, where Jews around the world light the Chanukah menorah for eight nights.

In San Francisco's downtown Union Square, people of all faiths gather as an annual tradition since 1975, to light a giant menorah. This San Francisco tradition was the brainchild of rock and roll concert promoter Bill Graham. Now there are thousands of similar celebrations world-wide.

To all who celebrate, may this beautiful eight day festival of lights be joyous for you and your loved ones.

Yesterday I blogged about the power of sharing that started with a photo that went viral via Pinterest.

If you haven't heard about Pinterest, it's a (highly addictive) site that lets its users act as curators of style. Members can “pin” images of anything they find online or in real life that strikes their fancy to create virtual mood boards.

I've been "pinning" for a couple of years and it's way too much fun! I think I've "pinned" over 4,000 images to date.

The Power of Sharing.

See this photo above. Isn't it magical? Well, that's what thousands of others thought when blogger, Beth, of Unskinny Boppy, did a blog post last year featuring her son Garrett in front of their Christmas tree.

It began as just a sweet little post with Beth's tutorial on how to take glowing pictures of your Christmas tree using a special trick with her camera. She had no idea what was about to happen.

Suddenly, a few people began pinning that photo on Pinterest, which spread like wildfire, and eventually went viral. Before you she knew it, Beth was a celebrity of sorts. Over 46,000 shares of that photo led to her blog. Amazing!

Now Beth has started a "show your glow" Christmas tree decorating link party here, where hundreds of others are sharing their holiday photos.

A tutorial here, on how to get that "glowing light" effect in your photos. No, those weren't all lights on her Christmas tree!

Thanks for the inspiration Beth.

The moral of the story; there is huge power in sharing both in the virtual world and the "real" world. And FYI... if you'd like to do some sharing of your own on Pinterest, shoot me your email and I'll get your invite right out!

Come Tour the Silversmiths with Me!

With the holidays around the corner, and so many people preparing their holiday tables, I thought it would be the perfect time to talk about silver.

Many customers come to me asking how to maintain, repair and restore their collections. So, the PHB crew decided to take a trip to Biro and Sons, right here in our beautiful City by the Bay.

Alex Biro

Biro & Sons is one of the last silversmiths in the country. Alex Biro, a master silversmith with over four decades of experience, purchased the 5,000 square foot building on Folsom Street in San Francisco in 1965 from the Burridge Company, also silversmiths, who had inhabited the building since 1901 (five years before the big San Francisco earthquake in 1906 which destroyed much of The City). Since he took over, Alex Biro has passed on his silversmith expertise to his sons, Martin and Richard.

The primary business conducted at Biro's is the repairing and restoring of silver items. They also manufacture, fabricate and do special orders from high-end table top wear to trophies. The company does work nationwide and even internationally for hotels and restaurants including The Ritz, Paris.

Biro & Sons and Tiffany & Co. are two of just a few silversmiths left where one can truly learn the trade. They employ a staff of eight people.

With silversmithing becoming a lost art, it's wonderful to know that there's still a place in existence to repair or restore your silver, gold or brass. Biro & Sons is only a phone call away. You can always ship items to them and they are happy to repair and restore.

Holiday Splendor at Tail of the Yak!

The magic is brimming at my favorite shop, Tail of the Yak, located in Berkeley, California. Of course I had to trek over to see all of the new holiday surprises.

If you've never heard me talk about this gem-of-a-shop before, then welcome to the land of wonderment!

It's Tail of the Yak's 40th anniversary! Can you imagine a shop that's still in existence for forty years? Really, I'm not surprised.

Owners Alice, Lauren and staff do the most amazing job of creating a space that makes you feel as if you've left the world behind. From paper-adorned antique Santos statues, vintage ephemera, and breathtaking estate jewelry, this is wonderland at its finest.

Whimsical props are everywhere!

The holidays do not disappoint. The shop is filled with my favorites, surprise balls!

You may be asking, what are surprise balls? Artist Anandamayi Arnold has been making these works of art for many years.

Surprise balls are wound tightly around their sometimes lumpy contents. Anandamayi starts with a streamer and adds little prizes as she builds the ball. The only problem is it's too pretty, who wants to open it?

Look at these swan surprise balls above. Aren't they lovely? The prizes are in the bodies. I could never open one!

Surprise balls run about $18 to around $95, depending on the amount of work involved.

Hand made paper displays grace the shop...

AND, during the holidays a special annual tradition at Tail of the Yak are custom-designed poster-size calendars by co-owner, Lauren McIntosh. If you make a purchase you get one of these works of art. I still have many of my old ones from years back.

Lost Menus of the Grand Hotels

Ever wonder what it was like dining at Grand Hotels during the turn-of-the-century?

Thanks to Chow, they've dug up dozens of old hotel menus from library archives, went to work in their test kitchen, and voila! We have a lovely menu of a holiday feast fit for a King or Queen.

Big thanks to the ladies at Chow for using my hotel silver and china to serve their dishes on. Take a peek at a few... you may want to try some of these divine dishes. Good job ladies!

Small Business Saturday

Black Friday, Cyber Monday. Most of us have heard and seen these names blasted over and over entering the holiday shopping season.

But, what about Small Business Saturday? Have you heard of it? Tomorrow (Saturday) celebrates the second "Shop Small Movement" to drive business to local merchants across the US, helping them to create jobs, fuel the economy, and invigorate retail in communities across the country.

Being a small business myself, I can totally relate.

Today when I watched the news and saw people camped out at 12:00 am in front of Target awaiting the sales, I was horrified. Some people were gun shot, another pepper-sprayed. What's happened to this country? Has consumerism gone mad?

So, after my leisurely wake-up this morning, I decided to visit a small local boutique, Mio, in San Francisco. Not for any special sale, but because I knew that the bulk of shoppers were at the big chains, and that this particular neighborhood would be quiet. Indeed it was. I was able to actually find parking, buy a couple of clothing items, and head back home. So pleasant.

So many reasons to shop local and patronize your "Mom and Pops." From avoiding crowds, to helping your community, we can make a difference.

A couple of outstanding points from the Business Insider:

Revenue from Small Business Saturday might enable merchants to keep prices low and stock even more of those hard-to-find goodies you love.
Help your community. As U.S. News reported, local businesses reinvest in the local economy 60 percent more than larger chains and retailers.
One-of-a-kind gifts. Best Buy won't be carrying that handmade iPad cover you've been after or the delicate silk chemise shipped direct from Austin. If it's originality you crave, go local.
Incredible deals. To help entice customers to small businesses, American Express is offering a $25 limited statement of credit to cardholders who pre-register their Amex card on the Small Business Saturday Facebook page.

19th Century Thanksgiving Feast

Another great Thanksgiving menu from the 19th century. This is taken from Ingall’s Home and Art magazine, 1889. Fun!

HINTS ABOUT PREVIOUS PREPARATION. — GOOD CHEER IN ABUNDANCE, AND TIME FOR ENJOYMENT. (excerpt). The following bill of fare contains all required by traditional formula, and even more. The entire menu may be prepared with the assistance of one servant, or may be reduced to suit the convenience or resources of those who have no assistance. Everything in the list, before the roast turkey, may be omitted if desired, there may be a reduction in the variety of vegetables, or the pudding may be left out without transgression.

As this yearly festival is pre-eminently a family gathering, much of ceremonious serving may be omitted, adopting the old-fashioned custom of placing the substantial dishes, with their accompaniment of sauces, salads, pickles, jellies, etc., on the table at the outset, the dessert appearing when required. This old-time practice lends to the table the appearance of plenty and hospitality in keeping with the day, and affords the hostess the opportunity of social enjoyment and festive freedom so conducive to the highest enjoyment of the guests.

HINTS ABOUT PREVIOUS PREPARATION

(Caution: This section contains storage practices now regarded as highly unsafe) To avoid over-work and confusion, let everything possible be done before the day arrives. The turkey should be made ready, and the stuffing prepared, on the day before, and kept in a cold place till next morning. The salad and the dressing for it may be prepared, and kept separate in a cold place — the dressing being added when placed on the table. The chicken pie may be baked and the oyster pie also, and re-heated in the oven next day. The mince pies will be better if baked a few days in advance, while the pudding may be made weeks beforehand, and steamed an hour and a quarter on the day it is eaten. The pumpkin filling may be previously prepared, and the pies baked next morning before the turkey. Both jellies may be made two or three days in advance. The fruit may be wiped, placed in dishes, and set aside; the nuts cracked, and mixed with the raisins in the proper receptacles, and kept cool and moist until they are to be served. Sugar bowls and cruets should be filled. Dishes, cutlery, etc., should be ready to go on the table, which may be set soon after breakfast next morning, and a light cloth thrown over for protection. Almonds, olives, cheese, etc., may be arranged on plates and kept covered. The vegetables may be peeled the evening before, and kept in cold water without impairing their quality. The butter and flour may be rubbed together for gravy, and the ingredients for pudding sauce measured. These precautions taken, will relieve the housekeeper of undue anxiety and fatigue, and render the work comparatively light.

BILL OF FARE

Cream of Celery Soup.  Oyster Pie. Lemon Jelly.

Roast Turkey. Jellied Cranberry Sauce. Celery. Sated Sweet Potatoes.

Mashed and Browned Potatoes. 
Mashed Turnips.  
Chicken Pie. Oyster Salad.

Plum Pudding, Foaming Sauce.  Mince Pie. Pumpkin Pie.

Olives. Salted Almonds. Cheese. 
Fruit. Nuts. Coffee.

Cream Of Celery Soup. — After reserving the finest celery for the table, select the coarser white blades from that which remains, rejecting the green portions. Boil them till very tender — from an hour to an hour and a half. Rub through a coarse sieve or colander. For every pint of this pulp, have ready three pints of veal stock or chicken broth, boiling hot. Add the celery pulp, with two level “teaspoonfuls of salt, one scant fourth teaspoonful of pepper and a tablespoonful of flour rubbed into two tablespoonfuls of butter. Let it boil up, add one pint of sweet cream or milk, and when it again reaches the boiling point, remove from the fire without allowing it to boil. This soup may be prepared the day before, leaving out the cream, which should be added after soup is reheated.

Oyster Pie. — Line a baking-dish, which will hold three quarts, with a rich puff paste. Fill it up with bread crust and cover with a sheet of the paste, having an opening in the center. While it is baking, put two quarts of oysters into a stew pan, place over the fire, and as soon as they begin to boil, remove, and drain in a colander. Re-turn the liquor into sauce-pan, add one tablespoonful of salt, one-half teaspoonful (scant) of pepper, three tablespoonfuls of butter rubbed into three tablespoonfuls of cracker-dust, let it reach the boiling point, then add the oysters and one-half cup of cream. Let boil gently for three minutes. Remove from the fire and stir in one tablespoonful of lemon juice or good vinegar. Remove the top crust from the pie by parting the edge with a sharp knife, take out the bread crusts, fill with the oyster mixture, replace upper crust and serve hot. The crust may be baked the day before, and twenty minutes before it is wanted turn in the oyster mixture, boiling hot, replace the cover, and set in the oven to reheat. Serve with lemon jelly. An excellent crust is made for oyster and chicken pies by adding three teaspoonfuls of baking powder to a quart of flour, with one teaspoonful of salt, one teaspoonful of sugar, and then rubbing or chopping into it (using a chopping-tray and knife) one and a half cups of butter, or same quantity half lard and half butter. When ingredients are well blended, add three fourths of a cup of ice-water, gradually chopping it in. Roll out quickly, handling as little as possible. Those who fail with puff paste, cannot fail with this.

Lemon Jelly. — Soak one package of gelatine for two hours in two cups of cold water, then add two cups of sugar, the juice of five nice lemons, and the grated rind of one.—grating very lightly that you may not reach the bitter portion. Let it stand, covered, for one hour. Pour on three cups of boiling water and stir until dissolved. Strain through a flannel jelly bag. Pour into moulds, wet in cold water, and set in cold place to harden, or mould in one large form, and when cold turn out upon a pretty dish, and if you wish, garnish the base with a border of bright coloured jelly, cut in little cubes.

Chicken Pie. — For a dish holding three quarts, use two chickens, weighing together eight or nine pounds. After thoroughly cleaning them, separate them into joints, and put them in a kettle, with water enough to cover, to simmer until tender. If not over a year old, an hour and a half will be sufficient. A slice of salt pork, added while boiling, improves the flavour. Remove the chicken from the liquor, and set both aside to cool. When ready to make the pie, remove the fat from the liquor, place the kettle over the fire, adding a tablespoonful of salt and a fourth of a teaspoonful of pepper. When it boils, add three tablespoonfuls of butter rubbed into two of flour, stir until thick and smooth, then add beaten yolks of two eggs to half a cup of cream. Stir into the liquor and remove from the fire without allowing it to boil. Line the sides of the baking dish with nice rich paste, fill with the chicken, sprinkling the layers lightly with pepper, and using about a tablespoonful of salt. Pour over the sauce, which should be about three cupfuls, cover with the paste, having a gash in the center, and bake in a moderate oven for one hour. The pie may be ornamented with pastry rolled very thin and cut into ornamental shapes.

A Few Economical Dishes.

Apple Pudding. — Butter liberally a two quart earthen pudding dish, put in a layer of stale bread crumbs, then a layer of tart apples, pared, cored and chopped. Sprinkle the apple with sugar and either nutmeg or cinnamon as preferred. Add a few bits of butter, then repeat the process till the dish is full, making apples the last layer. Sprinkle with sugar, flavor, and add bits of butter. Lemon may be used for flavouring. Bake one hour. Good without sauce, may be eaten hot or cold, and with cream if desired.

Steamed Apple Or Peach Pudding.— Rub through a sieve one quart of flour with three teaspoonfuls of baking powder, one teaspoonful of salt, and one tablespoonful of sugar. Rub three tablespoonfuls of butter into the mixture, and mix into a dough with one and three-fourths cups of water. Butter a three-quart pudding mould or basin, and line it with the dough. Fill with three pints of chopped apples, add two tablespoonfuls of sugar, and a trifle of nutmeg. Cover with the paste, set in a steamer and steam for two hours and a half. Serve with the plain pudding sauce given in our January number. Dried peaches nicely stewed, make an excellent pudding of this kind eaten with cream, while canned berries are delicious with their own juice for a sauce. Nice for ironing days.

A Dainty Breakfast Dish. — Mix well with two cups of cold boiled rice, one beaten egg, one tablespoonful butter, one tablespoonful sugar, one-half teaspoonful salt. Shape into cakes between the flowered hands, and set away several hours to become firm; may be made in the evening. Fry in nice beef drippings, and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Walled Turkey. — Line a greased baking dish with cold mashed potato, moistened with a beaten egg and a little milk. Fill in with cold chopped turkey, sprinkle with bits of dressing, pour over it a cup of the gravy, and bake for half an hour.

My grandmother did it. She lived until 100. I wished I had asked her the secret to aging gracefully. I know one thing; she used regular over-the-counter moisturizer like Ponds. No fancy eye creams, serums, anti-oxidants or anti-wrinkle creams! And, she had beautiful skin her whole life!

I never go to bed with my makeup on. that is number one. At night you must let your skin breathe.
I use a lipstick brush to paint on my lipstick--it stays on longer that way. I can also use a lipstick longer than anyone else because I can dig into it.
Every night before I got to bed I use Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour beauty cream on my lips. You must keep your lips moisturized.
When it comes to fashion you must be aware of your skin tone. You don't wear orange lipstick with a red dress.
I make myself go out everyday, even if its only to walk around the block. The key to staying young is to keep moving. You are never too old to exercise.
Invest in quality pieces, they never go out of style.
Don't look at the calendar, just keep celebrating everyday.
I dress up everyday and I don't wear blue jeans. I dress up even to mail a letter, you never know who you will meet along the way.
I have been active my whole life. An old Elizabeth Arden Ad said,"If you want to look like this when you are forty start when you are twenty."
I wake up every morning and say, "This is the day the Lord has made."

Ghosts at the Palace Hotel?

Last night I went on the annual "ghost walk tour" at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.

Crowds of people gathered to go room-to-room and hear the tales of the spectral visions, glowing orbs and mysterious events that all haunted the hotel. Kings and presidents died there, gun shots have been fired through their corridors, and tragic romances have ended at the Palace.

President Warren G. Harding died suddenly while staying here in 1923 and is rumored to be among them.

There is also a reclusive poltergeist that periodically locks itself in the dining rooms.

A joking ghost, who enjoys tapping people on the shoulder, haunts the Pied Piper Bar.

A mysterious French girl from another century has been seen in the kitchen asking for soup.

"The Lady in Red,"a succubus who roams the halls at night and is said to walk through the walls of rooms where businessmen traveling alone are staying, paralyzing them in their beds with fear.

Will you be staying at the Palace Hotel in the near future???

Wanna Come Antiquing With Me?

Hope you had a wonderful weekend. I spent my weekend hunting for treasures. My friend Reneé and I took a trek up to Sacramento County to shop at some of our favorite haunts. Thought it would be fun to share them with you!

The first stop was to Cottage Girls in Carmichael, CA. Talented friend Jana has been the proprietor of this charming shop for several years.

This cottage is brimming with beautifully edited pieces. You'll find vignettes of whimsical, curious and stunning antique/vintage items. I always leave there with some goodies!

You can spend hours looking through the layers of wonder, so beautiful! I especially love Jana's neutral color palette.

Vito was being a sport, although he really dislikes antiquing!

Next stop was to the city of Fair Oaks, not too far from Carmichael. My friend Laurie recently opened the fabulous Bleu. Located in Old Fair Oaks Village (the cutest little street), Laurie's shop is filled with gorgeous antiques.

From gleaming old French chandeliers to garden furniture, you're sure to come home with a treasure!

Laurie grew up surrounded by antiques and has a avid eye for the most striking and beautiful things. I've always admired her aesthetic.

I purchased this wonderful old dog plate featuring a 1910 calendar. Love it!

Right next door to Laurie's shop is another lovely store, Bungalow.

Bungalow carries home and garden items including architectural fragments, repurposed & painted furniture, garden elements...the list goes on! This store is packed with treasures and has a sublime ambiance.

One of the special attractions in Old Fair Oaks Village are the chickens, roosters and hens that just wander around the village square and stop traffic. I tried to photograph them (below) but they ran too fast when they saw the camera!

Columbus Day in the City!

It was supposed to be just a regular Sunday. A little relaxing, some work. I had to take a drive to North Beach (the Italian section of San Francisco) to do an important errand. Little did I know that yesterday was the Columbus Day parade AND Fleet Week, which is when the Blue Angels Navy flight team stages a loud and crazy air show. Oh boy. I was in trouble. I had no clue that this was going on. I hate crowds!

There must have been 250,000 people in North Beach yesterday. Can you believe that there was actually a parking garage charging $55 to park? Unreal. I was so frustrated with the gridlock traffic, that I forked out $20 just to park, which was a bargain!

People were lined up for blocks dining curbside, while watching the City's oldest civic event and the nation's oldest Italian-American parade, a San Francisco institution since it was established in 1868.

North Beach is known as San Francisco's Little Italy, with its high density of restaurants, cafes, bakeries and old world delicatessens. It was also the historic section of the beatnik culture. And let's not forget the famous nightclubs and strip clubs. Quite a flavorful neighborhood, and one of my favorites in the City.

Even the street posts are painted the Italian flag colors...my friend Lizzie (above) with Vito...

North Beach is adjacent to Chinatown, so there's more of an ethnic mix now than in the early days when it was mainly Italian American immigrants.

Some Exciting News...

The other day I was having one of those kind of down days...thinking of my mom...missing her deeply. Moments later someone contacted me to let me know that I'm going to be included in an upcoming book, and that my living room made the cover photo. I don't mean to be braggy, but this couldn't have been more exciting news at that moment, temporarily bringing me out of my "funk."

The book is titled, "Hers: Design with a Feminine Touch," and written by the talented and fabulous Romantic Homes magazine editor, Jacqueline DeMontravel.

Hers offers hundreds of stylish ways for creating your own private retreat and is filled with hundreds of enchanting photos of stylish homes. I'm thrilled to be included among friends Janet of FrenchBlue, Lidy of French Garden House and many more. 224 pages full!

Actually my friend Liz found it, thought of me, and I couldn't wait to share it with you!

This 1950s handbag is manufactured by Saks Fifth Avenue and made in France. Isn't it fun? The bag is black leather and features brass plaques of Paris hotels; Ritz, Excelsior, Carlton, George V and Claridge. Paris hotels? Love that! I've never seen one like it. It measures 10" tall, 9-1/2" wide and 2-1/2" deep.

Bittersweet Beginnings.

This evening begins the holiest days of the year for the Jewish people-- the start of the Jewish New Year. It's a beautiful holiday; a period of reflection and introspection. It's a time to look back at the past year and seek forgiveness from those you have wronged.

I am certain that most struggle with their first holiday without a loved one. This is the first holiday I'll be celebrating without my mom. Mom always arrived at the synagogue hours early to sit in solitude, and of course, get a good seat. She loved listening to the beautiful music and chanting of the Cantor. When I was young I used to get angry having to go to temple that early, but now I think I understand.

It's surreal thinking back on the memories of our entire family sitting around the table reigning in the New Year with the traditional foods such as apples and honey, symbolizing a sweet year. One by one, they've all passed on, and now the holiday will never feel quite the same. So on this bittersweet Rosh Hashanah I will reflect on the past, holding its memories near and dear, looking to the future with hope.

So my friends, to all who celebrate, wishing you and your families a sweet year full of health, happiness, and peace. Shana Tova!

Who Said That Poodles Aren't 'Real' Dogs?

But, of course they are! What other breed looks so regal dining with you?

When I was ten years old my parents bought me my first dog. It was a Toy Poodle, because (as Mom said) Poodles don't shed. I named him "Fluffy." From that point on, I've had a strong love for Poodles.

I've been told that Poodles "aren't real dogs" and that they're hyper and yappy. No, no, no, no. This breed is incredibly smart, playful and loving.

Originally bred as gun dogs, Poodles soon became beautiful elegant companions for the glamorous and creative community as well as the Royals.

When we bought our dog Vito (as in Vito Corleone from The Godfather--he's a fierce little guy), it was instant love. I thought it would be funny if he could dance the "Can-Can," but that didn't go over too well. Shouldn't a French Poodle be able to dance?

I'll admit, I'm not terribly fond of the "topiary" Poodle clip. There are so many cute clips, so Vito sports a "puppy cut."

Both Madame de Pompadour and Marie Antoinette had beautiful Miniature Poodles.

Even Dame Elizabeth Taylor owned Poodles!

What breed is more fashionable than the Poodle, huh? (insert laughing out loud)

No other dog can match their uniqueness-- their prancing paws, perhaps a bit of an attitude sometimes. Poodles always remain my favorite breed. Now let's have a bit of brie, shall we?

Do You Covet Vintage Ephemera?

Well, I have just the book for you. Taschen recently published, Menu Design in America: 1850-1985. This hardcover book explores the golden age of design and dining through 800 menus, beginning with the bills of fare for the very first restaurants that opened during the late 1800's.

I adore vintage menus. Collecting menus is a little pastime of mine. I have some favorites framed in my kitchen and little breakfast nook. Their beautiful graphics, history and content just thrill me. It's always fun to look at the prices back in the day.

Ooh, love this one from Bimbo's 365 Club, which still exists in San Francisco. I actually own this menu...

So, if you love old menus and restaurant history, pick up a copy of Menu Design in America here.

Obsessing Over...

I must confess... I've been coveting bejeweled shoes. Perhaps it's the 1980s in me still craving a little glitz, but these Vera Wang shoes just send me.

Eye-balling the ballet flats. The pale hues with peep toes are divine...

They almost have a vintage feel to them, don't they? Love the faded pink snakeskin with sparking jewel clusters...

So, do I go with the peep toe or the closed toe?

This white is lovely, but not practical for San Francisco weather...

I couldn't decide which colors...they're all so beautiful. So I splurged a bit and ended up with the closed toe (above) in black. Just received them in the mail today and they're comfy as can be. Worth every costly penny. They match with everything and add that little bit of sparkle to a boring outfit!

Had to treat myself! Is there anything you're obsessing over?

I regularly receive emails from people inquiring about how to care for their hotel silver or where to acquire specific pieces. I thought I'd try and answer some of the frequently asked questions and hope they help with your search.

Q. I'm looking for large items such as punch bowls and serving platters. Do you ever come across any?

A. Early pieces of hotel silver were primarily made for individual servings, such as small little teapots, coffee pots, serving dishes or butter pats --one for each guest. A small tureen could have been used for a single serving of soup, but can now be used to hold gravy or sauce. Back in the early 1900s, china was mixed with silver for serving. There weren't a lot of large-scale pieces. If they do exist, they are quite rare and costly.

Q. I'm interested in purchasing 8, 10, 12-piece place settings of flatware. Do you carry that?

A. Hotel silver is getting more and more difficult to acquire. I generally come across individual pieces of flatware. Sometimes I get lucky and acquire a small set, but have never come across a complete table setting. I always suggest mixing and matching. It's more fun anyway!

Q. I'm looking for a bulk lot of ______. Do you carry that?

A. As I mentioned above, hotel silver is hard to acquire. It's like mining for gold. You never know what you're going to find and from where. It's not often you come across a "lot" of one type of piece. However, if a hotel is liquidating, there is an occasional opportunity to purchase an entire "lot."

Q. Can you locate a piece of silver from the _____ Hotel?

A. Quite frankly...well (see above answer). I really wish there was a 1-800-hotelsilver number. I'd have a wonderful supply!

Q. How do I care for my hotel silver?

A. Actually, I did a blog post about that some time ago, referenced here. I swear by Hagerty Silver Foam!

Q. I need a piece repaired, what do I do?

A. I highly recommend a qualified silversmith. We have an excellent one here in San Francisco called Biro & Sons. I plan on devoting an entire post on their operation in the near future.

Missoni for Target FRENZY!

This morning I was perusing one of my favorite blogs and she mentioned the Missoni collection for Target launching today. The curious person that I am, of course I had to mosey over to Target's website to check it out. Well, the site was down. See above photo. Target, down? That's big.

Turns out that there was quite a frenzy and everything sold out! Even Twitter (above) is going mad!

Look at this shopper (above) from New England with a full cart. She was reported screaming, hoarding and pushing! Does she really need dozens of zig zag dresses for her wardrobe?

Glad that frenzy shopping is still alive and well in the USA.

Duquette DECO-dence!

Oh my, my, my, my, my. I flipped when I came across these old photos of Bullocks Department stores.

In 1935 Tony Duquette was hired by Bullocks to change their interiors to reflect the seasons. Because Los Angeles has no discernible seasons, it was Duquette's job to make it appear as if they did.

Upon seeing his work, legendary decorator Elsie de Wolfe uttered the fated words, "Who is this kid, I've got to meet him." De Wolfe took Duquette under her wing and sent his career soaring.

The other day my friend Renee and I were driving around and she asked, "What did we do before we had a GPS? How did we ever find our way around?"

I'm sure you all remember the days of mapping out your route and getting lost along the way. There was something kind of fun about that though, wasn't there?

I miss the old paper map. I miss having stacks of old tattered and folded maps in the car. I miss sitting in the passenger seat and highlighting how far we've gotten along the way.

Remember those thick Thomas Guides? I still have some of them in my van!

I'm sorry, but as well as the GPS works, it often makes errors. Like the time it told me to make a u-turn in the middle of the freeway!

With a paper map, you can get a complete picture, plot your route, and have true satisfaction and awareness about where you are.

My husband is a concierge at a San Francisco hotel and I was pleased to hear that just about every hotel guest still requests a map. They get a San Francisco map and a walking map and they actually use them!

Maps are so visually beautiful, aren't they? If you're not going to use maps as travel guides, how about using them for decorating?

I'm just curious, how many of you still use a map?

Toilet Hunting...

Yep, that's right...I'm searching for a new, but original vintage toilet for my bathroom. I am a purist and want to keep as much of the original fixtures as possible. Even though tiles are cracking and there's rust in the sink, I refuse to remodel or gut. It's those minor flaws that gives the house so much charm.

Our house was built in 1939 and I absolutely love the green basin and tub. Problem is that the toilet had been replaced at one time and now it's on the verge of history. I refuse to get white, so I'm scouring around for replacement toilets.

This basin (above) was found on deabath.com. They have some wonderful vintage fixtures, but I can't seem to find a complete toilet and I refuse to go with white. It has to be green!

It's so hard to find the right design and color, but Church Toilet Seats has a great toilet matcher chart. You use it by manufacturer and find your color number. Found out that mine is Surf Green.

Found this toilet lid (an exact match) on eBay, but need the rest of the toilet!

Another great source called Period Bath offers an array of vintage toilets...found this (above), but not complete!

So now I'm off to toilet salvage yards to see if I can't find myself a green toilet!

When I saw this photo on Amy Atlas' blog, I flipped! I just had to find out where those whimsical tassels were from!

Side, Berkeley

This past weekend I took a ride to the East Bay for a most relaxing facial, but not before visiting a couple of new shops that I wanted to share with you.

First stop was to the charming shop, Side, in Berkeley. This young shop (opened about a year ago) is filled with everything from furniture and silverware, to mirrors and gift items. Owner Carolyn, who is simply a delight, is truly enthusiastic about vintage items and it shows with her array of lovely items for sale.

Carolyn rescues pieces of furniture she acquires and painstakingly restores and paints them to give them a refreshing new look. Many of these pieces are damaged and have seen better days, but with Carolyn's touch they come alive again.

Next stop...hold on to your seat!!!

The Little Shop of Hoarders, Oakland

Do you all know Terri at La Dolfina? Well, this past week Terri blogged about the opening of her new shop, The Little Shop of Hoarders in Oakland, California. I could hardly wait to see it!

Terri has partnered up with legendary antiques aficionado, Ron Morgan, and two others, offering a large space brimming with vintage curiosities.

Looking for a fun read & visual? Floral designer Amy Merrick contributes a weekly column at design*sponge called, "Living In," where she dissects the styles of her favorite films. Her round up of products and clever commentary are quite entertaining. Here are a couple of my favorites, The Sound of Music, of course...

"Whatever your feelings about musicals now, it’s undeniable that every little girl has dreamed of living in The Sound of Music at one point or another. Most first viewings happen at such a young age that being 16 going on 17 seems an utter impossibility. It’s hard not to still dream about singing on mountaintops, dancing in gazebos or picnicking in fine Alps form."

"The curtain-made clothes get a lot of play, but how about the girls’ sweet sailor uniforms? The movie blends a charming mix of Fraulein Maria and Captain Von Trapp — a little free spirited and a little fancy, too. Speaking of films...my all-time favorite, The Godfather. Here's Amy's round-up and some of her commentary...

But I’m about 90% sure that my obsession with the Corleone, Italy scenes stem from the mere presence of Apollonia, Michael Corleone’s albeit brief bride. Hello, girl crush of my life. I have spent many a tearful night begging god to turn me into a 17 year old, rural Italian bombshell, but no. Hence my constant hunt for a bit more godfather bits to add to my life. – amy m."

And speaking of "living in" the Godfather, I just returned from visit Francis Ford Coppola's winery in Napa County. They have a Godfather museum with some of the artifacts from the film. Yours truly was thrilled to stand next to the actual desk used in the movie!

Remembering John Lee Hooker...

John Lee and I - February, 2000

Today would have been Blues legend, John Lee Hooker's 94th birthday. It's been 10 years since he passed away and I still think of him daily. Those precious sayings that one can never forget.

In the event that you didn't know, I used to work in retail banking when I met John in 1986. He was such a character and we became fast friends. Some years later I started working for him and became his personal assistant for 8 years. Yep, all of this before delving into the antiques world. I feel truly blessed to have had that experience.

The photo above was taken at my 40th birthday, where we celebrated with a private party at a good old night club with John performing. I even jumped up on stage, played tambourine and "boogied with The Hook!" A horrible tambourine player with no rhythm, but heck, I got to rock out with the band! And what an honor to have the great John Lee Hooker perform for my birthday~

I cherish the memories I have of this kind, gentle, and talented man. So, let me be one of the first to wish you my dear missed friend..

I laughed myself silly when I stumbled upon this photo online. This lady smoking her cigarette in a plastic-lined room is just classic, don't you agree?

I remember my grandmother's large off-white plastic covered sofa. It was like sitting on a big sheet of Saran Wrap!

Did you have family or friends that covered their sofas or draperies in plastic? How about lamp shades? Because, God forbid, we wouldn't want to ruin them, would we?

Passionately Pink!

I don't know about you, but I can never tire of pink. When I came across this vintage pink satin upholstered bed, I just had to have it.

The wooden bed frame is the original pale sage finish, with rose and gilt highlights and beautiful hand-painted roses and daisies at crest of headboard and foot board. It even has brass tacks *sigh*

Unfortunately, I have no space for it, so it's available to purchase at my boutique here.
