What's Next?
I'm sure by now many of you have heard of the sudden closing of these four magazines from Conde Nast. So sad for the employees, and of course, the loyal readers. Gourmet magazine was established 68 years ago and has one of the largest followings. Here is what blogger Freckled Citizen has to say about it. 
I just read that 80% of magazines' revenue comes from advertising. Okay, we're in a recession and that accounts for a lot of this. But, recently we've lost so many wonderful print magazines; House & Garden, Domino, Blueprint, Home Companion, to name a few. I love going to my mailbox and seeing stacks of new magazines awaiting. I'm a bit of a magazine There's nothing better than curling up with a magazine, flipping through the pages, earmarking them or tearing them out. Stacks of magazines all around. I shutter to think of sitting on an airplane reading a magazine from a computer screen.
So, what's next? Do you think that one day there will be no print magazines? Are some just being weeded out because there are too many? What are your favorite magazines? What can we do, if anything, to support them?

ps - i didn't see PHB in this weekend's LA Times. they really ought to just do a feature on you!!!
My favourite magazines are the British 'Country Living, 'Country Homes and Interiors and, I get 'Victoria' sent to me. I used to get every interiors magazine ever printed but decided to just get three. So sorry that the ones you have mentioned have had there day, XXXX

Englebreit- coming home to magazines in the mail box brings expectations of a long bath followed by a cup of hot tea and jumping under the covers to read them...
there are a few problems.
one, people have to prescribe.
two, magazines can't all be the same...i.e. when you see jennifer aniston on 15 covers, it's like SO WHAT!? and PS who wants to see her on a cover, anyway. i'd rather have a gorgeous cover that looks like something i can frame and keep for a million years THE WAY THEY USED TO BE.
and, BLOGS.
but magazines, and newspapers for that matter, can certainly shift the wave if they focus on what you can't get online. and do things their own way.
if you want a magazine to survive, you have to support it. you have to give up your Starbucks and buy a subscription. you have to write the publishers. magazines are expensive to make. they can't survive just because you "love them".
